The 2000 Year Epic Campaign
Hilthe Mountain Dwarves
The Hilthe Mountain Dwarves is the only known dwarven clan in Brind-Amor. They of course hail from the Hilthe Mountains to the southeast of the land. They have only recently come in contact with the former human tribes.
The Hithe Mountain Dwarves are strange lot and it has only been in the last 40 years that they have even been seen around Elon. They are a merchant race, dealing in gems, goods, weapons, and armor. The Elon saying of “The Dwarven quest for riches darkens their sense of right.” Frustration grew when dwarven merchants, with a large supply of steel weapons, refused to assist in the defense of Elon while the Black Bear Clan and Doombringer Orc attacks took place.
While the dwarven merchants do not cause trouble, they only deal with those with the money to spend on their fine weapons and armor. If a confrontation were to arise from a transaction, the merchants always have in their employ several dwarven guards, deck out with the latest steel weapons and armor to ensure the merchants are never taken advantage over.
Not much else is know about the dwarves, when they do talk it is only of prices and goods. They make no mention of their people, or lifestyles, or relations with other tribes or races in Brind-Amor. However, dwarven merchants have a penchant for ale and if a merchant were to have a good day of profit, a few pints, and a slew of flattering remarks thrown their way, they do reveal more than normal.
Some claim that a second Pillar, similar but not the same to the one that is sacred to Elon, resides high in the Hilthe Mountains and is heavily protected by the Dwarven Army. Other travelers have reported that this second Pillar is actually located in the eastern plains.
Sometimes they mention a tense relation with the elves that seems to stem from some sort of territorial dispute, to which the dwarves claim is a preposterous claim made by the elves. However, no further details seem to come from this conversation, not which group of elves nor the disputed territory.
On the rarest of occasion a very intoxicated dwarf will mention a most heated war with a tribe a humans that settled in or near the Hilthe Mountains. This seems to be some sort of sore subject because dwarf merchant will only furrow his brow and mumble curses under his breath when thinking of this, no matter how drunk they are.
On the bright side the Hilthe Mountain dwarves carry a fine assortment of weapons and armor and have a permanent store in Elon. They sell two types of medium armor aside from the hide armor that has been around for centuries. They produce chain shirts and scale mail, but both sell for 100 gps. Dwarven blacksmiths are currently working on a style they call “plate” that would be on the heavy side, as well as a chain shirt that covers more of the body.
For weapons they have developed steel swords and axes as well as steel versions of the stone and wood weapons the humans have come to know. They have also developed a ranged weapon that shoots bolts called a crossbow.
Session #4 (2nd Era) – The Champions of Elon visited capital of Dhom Kharn-Thorrim and was asked by the Merchant King to retrieve the stolen relic, the Amulet of the Heavens, and rescue his daughter Jabella Bronzebeard from the Broken Tusks. When the Champions arrived in the Hyx Valley, they learned these events stem from the invasion of the Voss Hobgoblins. The Champions dealt with the hobgoblins, recovered and returned the amulet. The Merchant King rewarded the Champions with a couple of suits of the newly created platemail armor.
Transition from 2nd to 3rd Era – The Dwarves felt that the battle was needed, but it was very costly to them as far as resources and materials were concerned. Because of this they doubled their efforts for profit, building weapon and armor stores all across Brind-Amor, even in the smallest of villages. Thordal Bronzebeard, the Merchant Kind lived for a long time. For a brief time after he passed, his daughter Jabella took over as the Merchant Queen. During her short reign before she passed away, Jabella tried to incorporate the Hilthe Mountain Dwarves more into the Brind-Amor Confederacy and tried to broker negotiations with the Broken Tusks. When the new Merchant King took over, the dwarves went back to their greedy ways.
